Wyoma (Birdsong) Sisco

Wyoma Sisco, the oldest of three daughters of the late George Birdsong and Mildred Battle, was born in Norfolk, VA on February 7, 1939. After an illness she went home to The Lord on October 20, 2017. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 50 years, Allan Sisco; her son, Dana Sisco; two sisters, Patricia (Birdsong) Durham of Atlanta, and Georgia Birdsong of Boston.

She was raised in Richmond, VA. She attended the Maggie L. Walker High School. She possessed a great love for music and dance, playing B Flat Clarinet as a high stepper in the Marching Band. She had the privilege of playing Bass Clarinet in the Symphonic Orchestra throughout the region. She also sang with the small local groups within the community.

Wyoma moved to Boston and there met her partner for life, Allan Sisco. She was a young bride at the tender age of 20 years old. Their union blessed them with two children, a son Dana, and a daughter Tracey. Both children were christened at St. Mark's Church by Reverend George Thomas at the time when she was a member there. She was a stay-at-home mom for the first 5 years of their life. Her love for singing and dancing was still vital and alive so she continued to fulfill that desire through singing with the Lawrence Bagwell Chorale and dancing with the Group 464 Workshop in Boston at 464 Massachusetts Avenue.

Wyoma decided early on that there was more that she wanted to do in life. She always had compassion for those that needed help, caring and assistance. She was very protective for those who couldn't take care of themselves, believed in treating people with kindness with the utmost respect and dignity. She did not care for those who took advantage of others. Married with two babies, she decided to follow in the footsteps of her mother and became a Registered Nurse by profession. She worked at various medical institutions in the Boston area, such as becoming one of the first African American nurses at The Faulkner Hospital, Massachusetts General Hospital in Medical Surgical Nursing, the Braintree Rehabilitation Hospital specializing in cerebrospinal accidents and the Veteran's Administration Hospital in West Roxbury, specializing in the Spinal Cord Injury Unit. After approximately 28 years in this field she decided to take an early retirement in 1995. Wyoma always felt a sense of gratification and appreciation dedicating her life to public service and community. Upon retirement she was the recipient of several awards, including Award of Appreciation providing dedicated and compassionate nursing care to The Spinal Cord Injured Veterans from the New England Chapter of Paralyzed Veterans of America and In grateful appreciation for loyal and dedicated service to the United Stated Government during her Honorable career.

She continued to give back to her community by working part time at various medical institutions. She volunteered at the Stoughton Public Library for several years. She continued to search for her spiritual home to find peace and contentment. She worshipped at the St Mark's Church of Roxbury, The United Methodist Church of Stoughton, The Jubilee Church of Stoughton...She found comfort at The Concord Baptist Church in Milton. She believed to serve in the Church of her Father, the Author, and Finisher of her life.

Wyoma loved life, loved her life, she was unselfish and a strong disciplinarian. She handled life with dignity, honesty, grace, elegance, class and style to the utmost. She enjoyed vacationing in the exotic Caribbean island of St. Martin, Martha's Vineyard, Bermuda, The Bahamas and Canada. She was an amazing cook, loved to shop, and enjoyed exercising. She had a natural talent and was creative in making clothes for herself and her children in her early years.

She is survived by her daughter Tracey Sisco, and a host of other relatives.
