William A. "Butch" Batte, Jr., 61, a resident of Brookline, NH, died unexpectedly while on vacation in Barbados on Thursday, January 23. He was the husband of Janice M. (Zani) Batte and father to William A. "BZ" Batte, III of Brookline, NH. Born in Norwood, he was the son of Virginia T. "Fudgy" Batte of Stoughton and the late William A. Batte.

He was raised in Stoughton and was a 1970 graduate of Stoughton High School, 1973 graduate of Greenfield Community College, 1975 graduate of Boston State College and 1980 graduate of UMass Boston, M.Ed with honors. He was employed by the Boston Public Schools for 5 years and retired from the Nashua School District, Nashua, NH after 22 years of service as a Physical Education Teacher. Mr. Batte was an accomplished ice hockey coach for Nashua High School, with numerous awards, 4 appearances in the state finals and 2 championships, 1 undefeated season and a combined record of 108-50-5. He was an active member of the Souhegan Valley Karate Club and a lifetime member of the National Ski Patrol System with over 20 years of patrolling the mountains of New Hampshire. Mr. Batte was co-founder and coach of the Nashua Winter Special Olympics. He and his wife renovated and operated the Brookline Village Store for many years.

In addition to his wife, son and mother, Mr. Batte is survived by 6 siblings, Teresa M. Batte and her husband Matt Foreman of Portland, OR, George A. Batte and his wife Patricia of Norwell, Patricia Cromwell and her husband Kevin of Stoughton, Nancy J. Zielinski and her husband Edd of Sedona, AZ, Susan M. Collins and her husband Daniel and Michael W. Batte and his wife Carolyn all of Stoughton. He is also survived by his brother-in-laws, Richard M. Zani of Pocasset and Robert Zani of Capitan, NM as well as 12 nieces and nephews.

Funeral will be held from the Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park St. (Rt.27) Stoughton on Thursday, February 6 at 9:30 AM followed by a Funeral Mass at Immaculate Conception Church, Stoughton at 10:30 AM. Visiting Hours Wednesday from 3-7 PM. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations in William's name may be made to the William A. Batte, Sr. Scholarship Fund, c/o Stoughton High School, 232 Pearl St., Stoughton, MA 02072.
