William S. Powell, Jr., 75, died on Monday, July 1, 2024, at the Falmouth Hospital, after a long courageous battle with Dementia.
Bill was born in Stoughton to William and Alice Powell on Feb 4, 1949. He was raised in Stoughton and was a 1967 graduate of Stoughton High School. At Stoughton High, he was a member of the Football, Basketball and Baseball teams and was voted Most Athletic and was inducted into the Stoughton High School Hall of Fame for baseball. Bill had a love for all sports, but baseball was a profound loved of his. He continued his education and played baseball at UMass Amherst and graduated with his Bachelors Degree in Physical Education in 1971. Bill also played baseball for the Boston Park League and the Easton Huskies.
It was in Stoughton that he met Joan Dawson, the absolute light and love of his life. They dated throughout high school and college and began their lifelong journey together when they married in 1973.
Bill worked as a Manager and General Manager at several car dealerships on Cape Cod for over 40 years. Prior to working in the car dealership industry, Bill worked as a Physical Education Teacher for 15 years in Stoughton. He also coached at Stoughton High as the Head Coach for the Black Knights Football and Baseball Teams, and also was an assistant coach on the Basketball and Wrestling Teams.
Bill was a resident of Mashpee for the last 7 years, previously raising his family and spending over 35 years in Sandwich. He was active in Sandwich in several different aspects. With youth sports, he coached and was on the board of Sandwich Little League and coached Sandwich Youth Basketball for several years. A faith filled man, Bill was a longtime active member of the First Church of Christ in Sandwich and served as a Deacon, and in multiple areas within the Church.
Despite living on Cape Cod for over 40 years, Bill always felt loyal to Stoughton and loved coming back to visit family and friends and enjoying a Town Spa Pizza. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who loved attending the activities and sporting events of his grandchildren. Above all, he enjoyed vacationing with his family and being surrounded by family and friends.
In addition to his wife Joan E. (Dawson) Powell of Mashpee, he is survived by his three children, Kristin A. Young and her partner Douglas Gutro of Mashpee, Kerry J. Perry and her husband John of Sandwich and William S. Powell and his wife Heather of Centerville. He was the brother of Amanda Galanis of Stoughton, Kent A. Powell of Marston's Mills and the late Bruce Powell. Bill was the loving Papa of John Young, Hudson, Olivia and Isabella Barrett, Matthew, John, Jessica, Jennifer and James Perry and Cooper and Savannah Powell.
Memorial Services will be held in the First Church of Christ, 136 Main St., Sandwich on, Wednesday, July 10th at 11AM with visitation prior from 9 AM until 11 AM.
