William J. Dineen, 70, died Monday, March 15, at his home in Mashpee after a battle with cancer. He was the husband of Diane M. (Carroll) Dineen. Born in Boston, he was a longtime resident of Stoughton and a graduate of Stoughton Schools. He also graduated from Massasoit Community College. He was a Veteran of the United States Army. Mr. Dineen was a member of the Stoughton Police Department for over 33 years and worked as a Motorcycle Officer. He retired 15 years ago. He was active in the Explorers, a member of the National Rifle Association and the Practical Pistol Association. He was a former Stoughton School Committee member. Mr. Dineen was an avid hiker and enjoyed frequenting the White Mountains and local state parks. He also enjoyed cowboy shooting.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Dineen is survived by his two sons, Michael Dineen and Matthew Dineen. He was the brother of Chief Philip A. Dineen, Stoughton P.D. (Ret.) and the late Suzanne DiGangi. He was preceded in death by his faithful dog and best friend Nick. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, a great-niece and his dear friend, Riain Geraghty of Belfast, Ireland.
A gathering will be held at Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park St. (Rt. 27) Stoughton on Friday, March 19 from 11-11:30 followed by a graveside service at Knollwood Memorial Park, High St., Canton at 12 Noon.
