William J. Costello, Jr., 84, a longtime resident of Stoughton, died at Brockton Hospital on Monday, December 14. He was the husband of 57 years of the late June M. (Mellyn) Costello. Born and raised in Dorchester, he was a graduate of B.C. High School. Mr. Costello was a Private First Class in the U.S. Army and a veteran of World War II. He was a resident of Stoughton for the past 55 years. He was the head custodian for Stoughton Public Schools for over 15 years before retiring 20 years ago. He also was a professional spray painter for many years. Mr. Costello loved his country and wrote politicians often on how to do their jobs better. In his free time he enjoyed trips to Foxwoods for poker and spending time with his grandchildren.
Mr. Costello is survived by his children, June Beckley of Gloucester, William Costello of Canton, Dawn Costello of Brockton, Robert Costello of Carver, Mary Coelho of E. Bridgewater, Margaret Rowe of ME and Frances Derry of Sharon. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Cynthia Cunningham. He was the brother of Robert F. Costello of Reading and the late Marie Shaugnessy and Alice McNeil. He was the grandfather of 15 grandchildren and he was also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Funeral will be held from the Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park St. (Rt.27) Stoughton on Friday, December 18 at 9:30 AM followed by a Funeral Mass at Immaculate Conception Church, Stoughton at 10:30 AM. Visiting Hours Thursday 4-7 PM. Burial will take place at Knollwood Memorial Park, Canton.
