William J. Cheverie, 87, a WWII Veteran of the US Army, died Wednesday, September 25, at the Caritas Good Samaritan Medical Center in Brockton after a short period of failing health. He was the husband of the late Dorothy L. (Melia) Cheverie. Born in Boston, he was raised in Randolph and was a graduate of Stetson High School in Randolph. He was also a graduate of Suffolk University in Boston. He was a resident of Stoughton since 1956. Mr. Cheverie was a Veteran of the US Army. For over 5 years, he had the honor of commanding the oldest organization in the army; the 1st Battalion, 182 Infantry of the Massachusetts Reserve National Guard. He worked as a Rehabilitation Counselor for the Massachusetts Commission for the Blind in Boston for over 30 years, retiring at age 61. An avid fan of the Boston Red Sox, in his free time, he enjoyed gardening, reading and listening to music.
He leaves his daughter, Joan F. Cheverie of VA and his siblings; Marshall Cheverie of Taunton, Clare Baker of FL and Robert Cheverie of SC. He was predeceased by his siblings Mary Otis, Bernadette Forte and Paul Cheverie. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Funeral will be held from the Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park St. (Rt. 27) Stoughton on Monday, September 29 at 8 AM followed by a Funeral Mass at Immaculate Conception Church, Stoughton at 9 AM. Visiting Hours Sunday 2-5 PM. Donations in Bill's name may be made to Greater Boston Food Bank, 99 Atkinson St., Boston, 02118. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery, Needham.
