Victorino F. America, 93, died Saturday, February 4, 2017 at the Southeast Rehabilitation Center in Easton after a period of failing health. He was the husband of the late Diana B. (Bettencourt) America. Born in Flores, Azores, Portugal, he was raised and educated in Flores and was a Veteran of the Portuguese Army. Mr. America owned a restaurant in Flores and also raised and exported cattle, operated a butcher shop and a taxi company. In 1967, along with his wife, he moved his young family to the United States and settled in Stoughton. He founded and owned America's Restaurant in Stoughton for many years. In the 1970's he proudly became a citizen of the United States. He was a member of several local Portuguese clubs. Upon retiring, he built a massive perimeter wall around his property and turned it into a showpiece in Stoughton every year with a colorful tapestry of thousands of flowers. Among his hobbies, he enjoyed composing poetry and singing a traditional version of the Portuguese Fado.
Mr. America is survived by all his children, numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nephews, nieces and his current wife, Maria da Penha America, whom he married in 2007. He was the brother of Jose America and Dr. Angelina Carvalho, both of Stoughton and the late Maria do Ceu America and Matilde Cabral.
Funeral will be held from the Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park St. (Rte. 27) Stoughton on Wednesday at 9 AM followed by a Funeral Mass at Immaculate Conception Church, Stoughton at 10:30 AM. Visiting Hours will be held on Tuesday from 4-8 PM. Interment will be at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Stoughton.
