Shannon M. McCarthy, 51, died Thursday, March 30, 2023, at AccentCare Hospice in Milton after a long courageous battle with cancer. Born in Quincy, she was a lifelong resident of Stoughton and a 1990 Graduate of Stoughton High School where she earned the nickname The Shanimal. Shannon worked as a bartender at several locations, most notably at the Baseball Tavern in Boston, O’Donoghue’s in Stoughton and Tommy Doyle’s in Brockton. She was a loyal friend to many, known for her big heart, witty personality and unrivaled passion for the Boston Bruins and Bud heavys. She was a dedicated mother, daughter, sister, aunt and friend who was always there to lend an ear or provide a laugh to anyone that needed it. After being diagnosed with cancer in 2017 and again in 2019 Shannon fought valiantly through several rounds of chemotherapy, difficult surgeries and physical setbacks with a fierce will and the support of her wide village of family and friends. She was an ardent supporter of the Stoughton Police and Fire Departments and Boston Sports teams. In her free time, she enjoyed cooking, playing pool, going to the Newport beaches, going to Bruins games both at home and on the road, and spending time with her family and friends.
Shannon is survived by her beloved daughter Hannah R. Carpenter, and her loving parents. Paul J. and Eileen A. (Mowles) McCarthy of Stoughton. She was the sister of Kimberly A. Newbury and her husband Capt. Bradford A. “Golden Boy” Newbury (Stoughton FD) of Bridgewater. She was the aunt of Colin Newbury and his wife Courtaney, Bridget Lowder and her husband Brett and Kiera Newbury and her partner Kyle Hyson.
