Ruby M. (Allen) Bates

Ruby M. (Allen) Bates, 101, died Monday, June 12, 2023, at the Hellenic Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Canton. She was the wife of the late Harold G. Bates. Born in Pembroke, Nova Scotia, Canada, she moved to the United States at age 2, settling in Boston. She was raised in Boston and enjoyed spending her summers with her grandparents in Nova Scotia. She was a graduate of Boston Schools. In 1969, she moved to Stoughton where she lived for over 45 years. After raising her family, she worked at Barrow Fabrics in Canton for many years and retired in 1990. In 2013, she sold her house in Stoughton and moved into the Hellenic Nursing Home in Canton, where she has lived for the past 10 years. The residents and staff at the Hellenic treated Ruby like family during her time there. Ruby was an animal lover and enjoyed watching ghost stories on TV, knitting and walking. Known for her snarky personality, she enjoyed traveling to Lake Tahoe and Foxwoods to play the slots and loved spending time with her family and friends.

Ruby was the mother of Donald H. Nickerson and his wife Sandra of Stoughton, Barbara A. Walsh and her husband John Paul Walsh of Bridgewater and the late Alan G. Bates. She was the sister of James M. Allen of Stoughton and the late Gilbert F. Allen, Shirley R. Hanson, Inez Price and Elizabeth Allen. She is also survived by 6 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. 

A Visiting Hour will be held in the Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park St. (Rt. 27) Stoughton on Monday, June 19, 2023, from 10-11AM followed by Funeral Prayers at 11AM. Donations in Ruby’s name may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Pl., Memphis, TN 38105.
