Reginaldo S. Picanco, 82, died Monday, July 3, 2023, at the St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center in Boston. Born on the island of Graciosa in the Azores in Portugal, he was raised and educated on Graciosa. As a young man, he was a member of the Portuguese Army and was stationed in Angola. After his honorable discharge, he returned home and was later became a police officer on the island of Madeira. In 1969, he married Nizalda A. Reis in Graciosa, and together they came to the United States to start a family and settled in Stoughton. Together, Reggie and Nizalda enjoyed over 54 years of marriage and enjoyed raising their two sons. He worked as a Maintenance Mechanic at Cumberland Farms in Canton for many years and previously worked in the same role for Quality Steel in Stoughton. He was a gifted handyman and carpenter who enjoyed woodworking and music and he could frequently be found working on a project for both family and friends. Reggie was a member of the San Joao Filharmonic Society in Stoughton where he shared his talents as a Bandolin player. He was also a member of Club Luis Camoes in Stoughton and enjoyed spending time at J & G Grill in Stoughton. In his free time, he enjoyed spending time with his family and his friends.
Reggie is survived by his wife Nizalda A. (Reis) Picanco of Stoughton and his two sons, Reginaldo A. Picanco and his wife Lori of Stoughton and Stephen S. Picanco and his wife Stephanie of Brockton. He was the grandfather of Dale, Chloe, Dakota, Ethan and Adyn Picanco. Reggie was the brother of Elberta Silveira of Peabody, Dorlinda Garcia and Maria Picanco both of Portugal, Eurico Picanco of Medford and Antonio Picanco of Stoughton. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Funeral will be held from the Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park St. (Rte. 27) Stoughton on Saturday, July 8 at 9:15 AM followed by a Funeral Mass at Immaculate Conception Church at 10:30 AM. Visiting Hours Friday from 4-7 PM. Burial to follow at Evergreen Cemetery.
