Priscilla Mayden

Priscilla (Maltby) Mayden, 92, a long time resident of Salt Lake City, Utah, died Friday, May 6 at West Acres Nursing Home in Brockton, MA after a short stay. She was Director, Emerita, Spencer S. Eccles Health Sciences Library at the University of Utah.
Born and raised in Stoughton, MA to W. Elmer and Elizabeth (Stowell) Maltby, she married John Carroll Mayden, later divorced.
She was educated in Stoughton Schools and graduated from the Maltby School, operated by her parents. She received her B.S. degree from Simmons College in 1941 and her M.S. degree from Columbia University.
She began her professional career in the Hartford, CT, Public Library, interrupted it to enlist in the Women's Army Corps during WWII and in 1946, became the Chief Librarian at the VA Hospital in Bedford, MA. In 1952, she moved to Salt Lake City to become the Chief Librarian at the new Fort Douglas VA Hospital. She became Medical Librarian of University of Utah Libraries in 1966 and Director of the Spencer S. Eccles Health Science Library in 1971, retiring in 1984.
A Fellow of the Medical Library Association and a member of the Academy of Health Information Professionals, she served on many national boards and advisory committees as well as consulting on the building of several university medical libraries. President of the Utah Library Association 1961-62, she served two terms on the Board of the Salt Lake City Public Library. At her retirement, colleagues established the Priscilla M. Mayden Award for Excellence in Medical Informatices Research, which is now an annual lectureship given at the Eccles Library.
A member of AAUW, volunteer in many community efforts and member of the First Unitarian Church, she enjoyed downhill skiing into her 80's. She loved Utah's mountains, deserts, birds and wildflowers.
Survived by her niece, Virginia (Terry) Ramborger of Lutz, FL; nephews William (Joanne) Maltby of Bridgewater, MA; Robert (Barbara) Maltby of Stoughton, MA; Bruce (Diane) Maltby of Weymouth, MA; twelve beloved grand-nieces and nephews.
Funeral will be held from the Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park St. (Rt.27) Stoughton on Wednesday, May 11 at 11AM. Visiting Hours Tuesday from 5-8 PM. Family requests memorial gifts be made to the Spencer S. Eccles Health Sciences Library Endowment, University of Utah or First Unitarian Church Endowment Fund, Salt Lake City, UT.
