Mildred A. (Rose) Cannon, 88, died Sunday, January 2 at the Caritas Norwood Hospital in Norwood. She was the beloved wife of the late Richard L. Cannon. Born in Boston, she was a longtime resident of Sharon. When Mildred wasn't raising her 4 children, she enjoyed raising chickens, had several geese, rabbits, cats, dogs to name a few. She also enjoyed braiding rugs, knitting and the outdoors which included many hours working in her vegetable and flower gardens. She was also, for many years the self appointed caretaker for a small parcel of town property that used to be at the intersection of Ames and East St, which affectionately and unofficially became known as "Millie's Circle". She loved sharing her vast life experiences to anyone who wanted to know and she never hesitated to lend a hand to neighbors in need. Mildred received the Silver Medal for heroic service on May 25, 1940. 2 boys and 2 girls were sailing on lake Massapoag at eight o'clock on a cold evening, the temperature being 40, the boat capsized in twenty feet of water and the mast caught on the bottom keeping the boat stationary. the other three were poor swimmers, and Mildred at age 14, swam a mile on shore to summon help. She was exausted by the time she reached land. Her beloved children learned by her example, to put others before themselves. She will be missed by all who knew her.
She was the Loving Mother of Penelope Cafarelle of Brockton , Janice Cannon of Easton, Richard Cannon of Norton and James Cannon of Randolph. She was the sister of Mary Nesmith of Mansfield and Lorraine Bomdhart of FL. She is also survived by 7 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
