Michael Anthony Avelar, 26, a lifelong resident of Stoughton, died in a car accident in Attleboro on Sunday, June 3, 2018. He was the son of Rufino M. "Finny" and Gail M. (Hammond) Avelar of Stoughton. Born in Norwood, he was raised in Stoughton and graduated from Southeastern Regional Vocational Technical High School, Class of 2010. He also graduated from Universal Technical Institute in 2013 with a Mercedes-Benz accreditation. Michael worked for O'Reilly Auto Parts in Stoughton. He loved cars and loved working on cars with his father in their garage.
In addition to his parents, Michael is survived by his brother, Adam B. Avelar of Brooklyn, NY. He was the grandson of Maria M. Avelar of Stoughton, Edwin H. Hammond of Canton and the late Rufino S. Avelar and Christine "Tina" Hammond. He was the nephew of Armanda Avelar Knitter, Amy Duquette and her husband Peter, Carol Hammond, Nancy Nagleschmidt and her husband Fritz and Kathleen Knowles and her husband Wayne. He is also survived by many cousins and friends.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Immaculate Conception Church, 122 Canton St., Stoughton on Friday, June 8 at 11 AM. Visiting Hours omitted. Interment will take place at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Stoughton. In lieu of flowers, donations in Michael's memory may be made to Spectrum Health Systems, 10 Mechanic St., Worcester, MA 01608.
