Maude E. (Burns) Cooke, 100, died Thursday, January 11, 2018 at the Cape Heritage Nursing Home in Sandwich, MA. She was the wife of the late Russel Birtwistle and Wesley Cooke. Born and raised in Fairhaven, she was a graduate of Fairhaven High School. Mrs. Cooke received her RN at Homeopathic School of Nursing affiliated with Yale School Nursing (Roger Williams Hospital School of Nursing).
Maude worked as a Registered Nurse at the Norfolk Nursing Home and the Blue Hill Nursing Home both in Stoughton and previously worked in the Neonatal Nursery at the Beth Israel Hospital in Boston for over 9 years. She retired in 1970. In her free time, she enjoyed knitting, making stained glass and spending time with her beloved family.
Mrs. Cooke was the mother of Nancy E. Schofield of Mansfield, Patricia F. Mattson and her husband Dennis of Bellingham, Elizabeth M. Holmes and her husband Arnold of Sandwich, Russel Birtwistle, Jr. and his wife Janet of GA, John G. Birtwistle of MD and the late Anne E. Silva. She was the stepmother of Raymond W. Cooke of FL, granddaughter Jamie Jarvis and her husband Rob of ME and the late Larry Cooke and his wife Leslie of WY. Maude was the daughter of the late Walter H. Burns and Annie Burns, the sister of the late Constance Deery, Frances Douvarjo, Anne Crowley, Herbert Burns, Milton Burns, Florence Burns and Grace Rioux. She is also survived by 17 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated in the Immaculate Conception Church, 122 Canton St., (Rte 27) Stoughton on Saturday, April 7 at 10 AM. A Visiting Hour will be held in the Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park St., (Rt. 27), Stoughton prior to the mass from 8:30-9:30 AM. Donations in Maude's memory may be made to the Hospice Services of MA, 577 Main St., Wareham, MA 02571.
