Mateus F. Garcia, 83, a longtime resident of Stoughton, died Sunday, January 12, 2020, at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, after a period of declining health. He was the husband of 48 years of Lina (Serpa) Garcia. Born on the island of Flores in the Azores, he was raised and educated in Flores. Mr. Garcia came to the United States many years ago and settled in Stoughton. He worked as a Shipping Clerk at J. Baker and Morse Shoe in Canton for many years and retired over 20 years ago. He was a member of the San Joao Filharmonic Society, Club Luis Camoes and the Portuguese National Club all in Stoughton. In his free time, he enjoyed gardening, tending to his chickens, greyhound racing, playing the lottery and spending time with his family.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Garcia is survived by his two daughters; Paula S. Garcia and Lisa S. Garcia both of Stoughton. He was the brother of Manuel Garcia of CA, David Garcia and Maria Santos, both of Stoughton, Olivia Garcia of Raynham and the late Joao Garcia, Francisco Garcia, Norberta Santos and Jose Garcia. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Visiting Hours will be held in the Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park St., (Rte. 27) Stoughton on Thursday morning, January 16, 2020 from 9-11:30 AM followed by a Funeral Mass at Immaculate Conception Church at 12 PM. Burial will follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Stoughton.
