Mary Francis (White) Rivers, 84, a longtime resident of Stoughton, died peacefully on August 31, 2023. She was the wife of the late John A. Rivers for over 55 years. Daughter of the late John L. White and Mary A. (Gwynn) White, she was born in Boston and raised in Brighton and Dorchester. Mary graduated first in her class at St. Columbkille’s High School in Brighton and then went on to graduate from Boston College in 1960. She was a teacher for over 30 years before retiring in 2003. Mary was always busy- she loved to travel, swim, read, knit, and spend time on the beach in Dennis.
Mary is survived by her children, Robert F. Rivers and his wife Patricia of Boston, Julie A. Hendley and her husband Paul of Nashville, and Christopher J. Rivers and his wife Bonnie of Easton, as well as her grandchildren, John Henry, Madison, Michael, Julian, Christopher, Peyton, Ella, and Avery. She is also survived by her brother, Kevin D. White of Boston and many nieces and nephews. Her family meant the world to her!
Funeral will be held from the Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park St. (Rte. 27), Stoughton, on Wednesday, September 6th at 9:45am followed by a funeral Mass at Saint Oscar Romero Parish, Canton, at 11am. Visiting hours Tuesday, September 5th from 4-7pm. Interment will take place at Evergreen Cemetery, Stoughton. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mary’s memory may be made to the Sisters of Saint Joseph, 637 Cambridge St., Brighton, MA 02135.
