Mary Elizabeth (McBrien) Ahern, card game master, raisin bread baker, friend to everyone, family rock, died Saturday, January 24th.
Born October 24, 1926 and raised in West Roxbury, Mary graduated from St. Thomas Aquinas High School. There she was assigned to write to WWII soldier, (late) Joseph G. Ahern. Correspondence began, and so did the start of their forever love. The family became residents of Stoughton in 1959, and many happy years were filled with neighborhood parties, conversations over coffee, and raising children.
Mrs. Ahern would tell tired moms at restaurants that they were doing a good job. She kept everyone honest, and brought out the best in so many. Her spirit is carried on by her children, Gerald J. Ahern of Stoughton, and Carol A. Langford and her husband Robert of Medway, as well as her treasured granddaughters Emily E. Langford, Colleen M. Langford, and Stephanie J. Langford, and her sister Barbara J. Betts of Stoughton. Mary is also survived by 3 generations of nieces and nephews, whose annual Thanksgiving get together began 37 years ago in honor of her late son, Stephen J. Ahern. Mary is now reunited with her beloved siblings Hugh "Frank" McBrien, Anna McFague, Patricia Connors, and Paul J. McBrien.
Visiting hours are Wednesday 4-7 PM at the Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park Street (Rte. 27), Stoughton. Funeral Mass is Thursday 10:30AM at the Immaculate Conception Church, 122 Canton Street, Stoughton. Donations in Marys memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701. Obituary and directions at www.farleyfh.com.
