Marjorie L. (Linscott) Sawyer, 88, a longtime resident of Stoughton, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family on Tuesday, July 7, 2015. She was the wife of the late John Chandler Sawyer. Born in Rockland, she was a graduate of Stoughton High School, Class of 1945. Mrs. Sawyer was a telephone operator for New England Telephone before the birth of her children. After the death of her husband in 1964, she became the owner of the Sawyer Print Co. in Stoughton. She then ran a daycare for many years, caring for many local children. Marjorie finished her career as a switchboard operator at New England Sinai Hospital in Stoughton, where she worked for over 25 years until her retirement at age 76. She was a Den Mother for Cub Scouts and Troop Leader for Girls Scouts and Brownies for several years. She was very active at the First Congregational Church of Stoughton, where she knitted over 200 prayer shawls. She also knitted hats for premature babies at local hospitals. Mrs. Sawyer's greatest joy was spending time with her family.
Marjorie was the mother of Martha J. Sawyer of Worcester, John Freeman Sawyer and his wife Nancy, Barbara J. Forde and her husband Thomas, all of Stoughton, and the late Richard Chandler Sawyer. She was the sister of Leonard Linscott of Marlboro and the late George Linscott. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Jennifer Lynn Sawyer, Kate Elizabeth Sawyer, Jeremy John Chandler Brace, and John Freeman Sawyer II, her beloved dog Ginger, and many nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service will be held at the First Congregational Church, 76 Pierce St., Stoughton on Sunday, July 12th at 3 PM. Visitation will be held in the Fireside Room at the church prior from 1-3 PM. Interment will be private. Donations in Marjorie's memory may be made to the MSPCA, 350 S. Huntington Ave., Boston, MA 02130 or the First Congregational Church, 76 Pierce St., Stoughton, MA 02072 memo-prayer shawl group.
