Maria (Barbosa) Sequeira, age 98, passed away peacefully on March 1, 2025, in her home, surrounded by loved ones. She was a loving, empathetic caregiver. Maria’s legacy was being the matriarch of her family, the glue that kept everyone together. Born, raised, and educated in Campana, Fogo, Cape Verde, she was the daughter of the late Tome Sequeira and Ana (Batista) Sequeira. Maria played a pivotal role in her family's life, tirelessly helping with the upkeep of their farm, their primary source of sustenance in Fogo, Cabo Verde. Her dedication extended beyond the farm as she took on the responsibility of raising her siblings, and later children and grandchildren, embodying the spirit of selflessness and nurturing that defined her life. In 1987, Maria embarked on a new chapter by moving to the United States. She resided in Hyde Park and Randolph before settling in Stoughton with her family. As a dedicated homemaker, Maria found immense joy in cooking and gardening - activities that brought warmth and beauty to her home. Her family was the greatest source of light in her life. Maria poured unconditional love and care to all those around her and took immense pride in nurturing her grandchildren. Maria maintained the home with unwavering dedication, serving as a constant source of hope and a solid foundation for her family.
Maria and her late husband, Ludgero (Adriano) B. Vicente, leave behind their five children: Carlos B. Vicente of Cape Verde, Rosinda B. Alves of Stoughton, Guilhermina Beier of Switzerland, Adriano B. Vicente of Fall River and Laurinda Fonseca of Dighton. She is also survived by her 21 grandchildren , 21 great-grandchildren, and her siblings: Filipe Fernandes of Dorchester, Joao Sequeira of Cape Verde, and Alberto Fernandes of France. She was predeceased by her siblings Dondinho Fernandes, Almirinda Lopes, and Augusta Fernandes. She also leaves behind her step-siblings Branca Fernandes of Cape Verde and Carlos (Djodjinho) George Viega Fernandes of Cape Verde, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held at the Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park Street (Rt. 27), Stoughton, MA on Thursday March 6th from 4-7 PM. Funeral will be held the next day, Friday March 7th at the funeral home at 9:15 AM, followed by a Funeral Mass at Immaculate Conception Church at 10:30 AM. Interment will be held at Evergreen Cemetery in Stoughton.
