Maria Fernandes Henriques, 98, passed away peacefully in Stoughton on Monday, February 23, 2015. She was born and educated in Lomba das Lajes, Flores, Acores on May 3, 1916 along with her dear twin sister the late, Elisa. She was also predeceased in death by her other siblings Francisco, Adelina and Jose. She came to the United States in 1960 and settled in Stoughton, MA, at the age of 43. For 53 years she was the loving and devoted wife of Francisco Medeiros Henriques, until his death on April 12, 1987.
Mrs. Henriques was the caring mother of 4 sons, Francisco Luis and his wife Victoria, the late Gilberto and his wife Maria de Lurdes, Jose Antonio and his wife Maria Evelina, all of Stoughton, and Celestino Henriques of Terceira, Acores.
She was the grandmother of 7 grandchildren, Victoria, Carlos, Ricky, Jeffrey, Michael, Tony and the late James Henriques. She took great pride in helping raise her grandchildren, teaching them all to speak Portuguese and joining them together in praying the rosary. She had 9 great grandchildren Amanda, Gabriel, Sofia, Brianna, Jaime, Matthew, Lalonnie, Robert and Taylor, and 2 great-great grandchildren Danica and Jack.
She is also survived by her nieces and nephews Leonel Fernandes, Maria do Rosario Avila, Mauricio Soares, Jose Manuel Moura, Maria Loura, Lucille Teixeira, and the late Jose Antonio, Rogerio and Hercules Brum.
Mrs. Henriques was a devout catholic, attended mass everyday until she became ill, a dedicated communicant of the Immaculate Conception Church, Stoughton. She made the promise to wear the brown scapular, always devoted to the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel. In her free time she enjoyed making afghans and her flower gardens.
Funeral will be held from Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park St., (Rt. 27) Stoughton on Friday, February 27 at 9:30 AM followed by a Funeral Mass at Immaculate Conception Church at 10:30 AM. Visiting Hours Thursday from 5-8 PM. Interment will take place at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Stoughton.
