Maria D. (Dias) Avelar, 68, died Wednesday, November 15 at her home after a period of failing health. She was the wife of Jose M. Avelar. Born in Corvo, Azores, Portugal, she was raised and educated there. Mrs. Avelar moved the United States in 1975 and settled in Stoughton. She worked as Ark Les Switch for about 3 years. Previously, she worked at Sealy Mattress for about 12 years. Most recently, she worked as a home health aide. She was a communicant of the Immaculate Conception Church, Stoughton. Mrs. Avelar was a member of the Holy Ghost Society. In her free time, she enjoyed knitting and cooking. One of the things Mrs. Avelar enjoyed most was setting up her Christmas Nativity Scene.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by her two sons, Joe M. of Stoughton and John A. of Walpole. She was the daughter of Maria Carmina (Caetano) Dias of Stoughton and the late Joao Dias. She was the sister of Jose Dias of Portugal. Mrs. Avelar was the Proud Grandmother of Jennifer, Andrew, Heather, Niklas and Mattheu Avelar.
Funeral will be held from the Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park St. (Rt. 27) Stoughton on Saturday, November 18 at 9:30 AM followed by a Funeral Mass at Immaculate Conception Church, Stoughton at 10:30 AM. Visiting Hours Friday 5-8 PM. Donations in Maria's name may be made to the Jimmy Fund, 10 Brookline Place West, 6th Floor, Brookline, MA 02445. Burial will take place at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Stoughton.
