Manuel G. Cachopa

Manuel G. Cachopa, 89, died at the Brockton Hospital on Sunday, December 16 after a brief illness. He was the husband of Constance (Gomes) Cachopa. Born in Lowell, he grew up in Madeira, Portugal before moving to Stoughton 71 years ago. Mr. Cachopa was an U.S. Army Veteran of World War II, serving in N. Africa, Italy and S. France. He was a factory worker at American Biltrite in Stoughton for 40 years before working at Ark-Les Switch in Stoughton for 10 years. He retired 25 years ago. Mr. Cachopa was a member of VFW Post 1645, American Legion Post 89, Portuguese National Club and Club Luis de Camoes all in Stoughton. In the 1930's he played on the Portuguese National Soccer team in Stoughton until they all entered the service and two teammates were killed. In his free time, he enjoyed fishing, gardening and cooking on Sundays.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Cachopa is survived by his children, Manuel J. Cachopa, Chief Stoughton PD and Julianne Cachopa both of Stoughton, Mary E. McCole of Easton and David Cachopa of Bridgewater as well as his sister, Mary Freitas of CA. He is also survived by 7 grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Agosto, John and Natalia Cachopa and 2 grandchildren.

Funeral will be held from the Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park St. (Rt. 27) Stoughton on Friday, December 21 at 9:30 AM followed by a Funeral Mass at Immaculate Conception Church, Stoughton at 10:30 AM. Visiting Hours Thursday 4-8 PM. Burial will take place at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Stoughton.
