Joseph R. Pitta, 94, died Thursday, February 16, 2012, at the Good Samaritan Medical Center in Brockton after a short period of failing health. He was the husband of 56 years of the late Mary (Santos) Pitta. Born in Lowell, he was raised and educated in Lowell and a graduate of Lowell Schools. He was a resident of Stoughton for over 63 years. Mr. Pitta was a World War II Veteran of the U.S. Army. He worked as a Truck Driver for Abbott Lumber Yard in Dorchester for 35 years and then as a Custodian at Stoughton High School for over 15 years. He retired many years ago. A faithful communicant of the Immaculate Conception Church, he was a member of the Portuguese National Club, Club Luis de Camoes and the VFW Post 1645 all in Stoughton. In his free time, he enjoyed spending time with his family.
Mr. Pitta was the father of Joseph W. Pitta of Stoughton, David M. Pitta of Sandwich, Daniel A. Pitta of Raynham and Mary M. Irving of Bridgewater. He was the brother of Mary Abreu and Edward Pitta both of Lowell, Carol Young of Andover, and the late Linda Chagnon, Rose Barker, George and Manuel Pitta. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be held from the Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park St. (Rt.27) Stoughton on Tuesday, February 21 at 8 AM followed by a Funeral Mass at Immaculate Conception Church at 9 AM. Visiting Hours Monday from 5-8 PM. Interment will take place at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Stoughton.
