Joseph W. McPherson, 84, a longtime resident of Stoughton, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, April 7 at the Caritas Good Samaritan Medical Center in Brockton. He was the husband of Mary M. (Remmes) McPherson. Born and raised in Dorchester, he was a graduate of Boston English High School. He was a resident of Stoughton for 54 years. Mr. McPherson was an aviation radioman with the U.S. Navy and a veteran of World War II. He was an equipment manager with New England Telephone for 38 years before retiring in 1985. He was an active communicant of Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Brockton for many years. In his free time he enjoyed running, traveling and golfing and his most cherished time was spent with his 30 grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, Mr. McPherson is survived by his children, Joseph W. McPherson and his wife Madlyn of MD, Mary P. Tousignant and her husband Albert of Plymouth, Nancy M. Cincotta and her husband Paul of VA, Janice E. Gallagher and her husband John of CT, Richard B. McPherson and his wife Janice of MD, Steven F. McPherson and his wife Tricia of Wakefield and Barbara J. Purcell and her husband James of Stoughton. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Ann Marie McPherson. He was the brother of John McPherson and his wife Ethel and Jean McPherson all of Dorchester and the late Donald, Eddie and Billy McPherson. He is also survived by 30 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews.
Funeral will be held from the Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park St. (Rt.27) Stoughton on Tuesday, April 14 at 8 AM followed by a Funeral Mass at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Brockton at 9 AM. Visiting Hours Monday 4-8 PM. Interment will take place at the VA National Cemetery in Bourne.
