Joseph J. Gelly, 80, died Tuesday, September 16, 2014, at the Royal Megansett Nursing Home in Falmouth after a long illness. He was the beloved husband of 56 years of Mary Elizabeth "Betty" (Cleary) Gelly. Born in Hyde Park, he was raised and educated in Dorchester and a graduate of Dorchester High School. He was a proud Veteran of the US Air Force during the Korean Era. Mr. Gelly was a resident of Falmouth since 1999, previously living and raising his family in Stoughton for many years. He worked as a supervisor at the Boston Public Library Printing Department for many years, retiring in 2000. Previously, he worked at General Services Administration in Boston. Mr. Gelly was a founding parishioner of St. James Church in Stoughton and for many years was a Eucharistic Minister at both St. James and at the New England Sinai Hospital in Stoughton. Mr. Gelly was a member of the Stoughton Grenadiers for over 25 years, the VFW Post 1645 in Stoughton and was a life member of the Knights of Columbus, Council 200 in Stoughton and Council 813 in Falmouth. In his free time, he enjoyed spending time with his friends and family and spending winters in Siesta Key, Sarasota, FL. Joe will be remembered for the man that he was, both a gentleman and a gentle man; he was a loving family man of integrity, respectful, honest and kind.
Mr. Gelly was the devoted father of Diane E. Govey and her husband Glenn of N. Easton, Ann M. Zucco and her husband Anthony of Bridgewater, Joseph J. Gelly, Jr. and his wife Lynne of Hanover, Paul M. and his wife Kara of PA, Robert E. and his companion Sheryl Siber of FL and Matthew J. and his companion Tara Merola of Cape Cod. He was the brother of the late Marie Moser. He was the beloved grandfather and "Pere" of Christopher and Sean Govey, Anthony Zucco, Jr., Ryan, Andrew, Lauren, Bridget, Amanda and Bradford Gelly and of Brenna and Braeden Merola.
Funeral will be held from Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park St., (Rt. 27) Stoughton on Saturday at 9:15 AM followed by a Funeral Mass at St. James Church, Stoughton at 10:30 AM. Visiting Hours Friday from 4-8 PM. Interment with military honors will take place at Evergreen Cemetery, Stoughton. Donations in Joe's memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Assn, 480 Pleasant St, Watertown, 02472.
