Jose Ilidio Gomes da Costa, 86, died at the Caritas Good Samaritan Medical Center in Brockton on Saturday, June 16 after a period of failing health. He was the husband of Maria Marcelino (Gomes) Costa of 61 years. Born in San Jorge, Azores, Portugal, he was educated in Flores, Azores, Portugal and moved to Stoughton in 1965. He was a Fork Lift Operator for Morse Shoe in Canton for 15 years before retiring in 1983. Mr. Costa was a member of Club Luis de Camoes and the San Joao Filarmonica Society both in Stoughton. He was a member of the Portuguese Military during World War II, serving in the Azores, Portugal and was proud of his two grandsons serving in the U.S. Military in Iraq. In his free time he enjoyed playing soccer in his younger years and also enjoyed fishing and playing Domino's and cards at the club.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Costa is survived by his children, Fatima Costa, Jose Antonio Costa, Teresa Henriques and Gorette Bettencourt all of Stoughton, Arlete Lourenco of Flores, Portugal and Dionisia Costa of Taunton as well as his sister, Bernadette Pimentel of Lisbon, Portugal. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 2 great-granddaughters, several nieces and nephews.
Funeral will be held from the Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park St. (Rt. 27) Stoughton on Tuesday, June 19 at 8 AM followed by a Funeral Mass at Immaculate Conception Church, Stoughton at 9 AM. Visiting Hours Monday 5-8 PM. Burial will take place at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Stoughton. Donations in Jose's name may be made to Greater Boston Food Bank, 99 Atkinson St., Boston, MA 02118.
