John James Urann

John James Urann

John James Urann passed peacefully on April 3, 2014 in his 100th year at St. Patrick's Manor in Framingham, MA. He was the husband, of 60 years, of the late beloved Kitty E. (Gall) Urann. Born in Boston at the beginning of World War I, he was raised and educated during the Great Depression in Sharon, MA. He was a graduate of Sharon High School and of the Bentley School of Accounting in Boston. John spent his early accounting career in Central America, in Honduras and Panama. He enlisted in the Army at the start of World War II and was stationed in Britain where he met his future wife, Kitty. Following the war, John was hired as an accountant, by Firestone to work on its rubber plantation in Liberia, West Africa. A year after his 1946 arrival in Liberia, Kitty joined him and they were married in Monrovia. All of their children, Robert, Francis, Nina and Michael, were born in Harbel, Liberia. In 1971, John retired and moved back to his childhood home in Sharon. John and Kitty lived in Sharon until her death in 2008. John then moved into assisted living at Carmel Terrace in Framingham to be closer to his daughter Nina. Committed to the Sharon community, he was actively involved in the Sharon Bicentennial and his high school class reunions. John was an avid reader, world traveler and held lifetime interest in world and current events.
John is survived by his daughter, Nina DeLoge and her husband Jack of MA, and his sons, Robert Urann and his wife Patricia of LA, Francis Urann and his wife Diane VanderKroef of CT and Michael Urann and his wife Pat of FL. He is also survived by his grandaughters; Zoe Williams, Molly Trappe and Alana DeLoge, and his great grandchildren, Madeleine and Jacob Williams. He was the brother of the late Thomas and Norman Urann and Florence Dover.
Visiting Hours will be held in Our Lady of Sorrows Church, 59 Cottage St., Sharon on Tuesday, April 8, 2014 from 10-11AM followed by a Funeral Mass at 11AM. Interment will take place at Rock Ridge Cemetery, Sharon. Should friends choose, donations may be made in his memory to: Friends of Liberia, PO Box 164, Etna, NH 03750 or www.fol.org
