John A. Rivers

John A. Rivers, Jr., 79, a longtime resident of Stoughton, died peacefully on Tuesday, March 13, 2018, surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of Maryfrances G. (White) Rivers for over 55 years. Son of the late John A. and Anna (Ritchie) Rivers, he was born in Somerville and raised in Arlington. John was a graduate of Arlington High School (Class of '56) and attended Northeastern University. He served in the Massachusetts National Guard. John was an auditor at Raytheon for over 25 years before retiring in 2003. He was active in Stoughton Youth Sports, especially in the youth hockey program. He was an avid coin collector and enjoyed spending time at the beach in Dennis.

In addition to his wife, John is survived by his children, Robert F. Rivers and his wife Patricia of Needham, Julie A. Hendley and her husband Paul of Lancaster and Christopher J. Rivers and his wife Bonnie of Easton, as well as his grandchildren, John Henry, Madison, Michael, Julian, Christopher, Peyton, Ella and Avery. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. His family was his utmost priority and his life's focus.

Funeral will be held from the Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park St., (Rt. 27), Stoughton on Saturday, March 17 at 9:15 AM followed by a Funeral Mass at St. John the Evangelist Church, Canton at 10:30 AM. Visiting Hours Friday from 4-7 PM. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations in John's memory may be made to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, PO Box 849168, Boston, MA 02284.
