John Pires, 88, a lifelong resident of Stoughton, died peacefully at Copley at Stoughton on Sunday, March 3, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. John will be dearly missed by his wife Marilyn J. (Herron) Pires of 64 years, and his children; Donna and her husband Frank Donaghy, Stephen Pires and his wife Kerry, and Brian Pires and his wife Debra. He was the beloved grandfather of Sean Donaghy, Kailey Pires Aubrey and her husband Luke, John "Jake" Pires, Nicholas Pires, Corey Pires, and Christopher Pires. Son of the late Joseph and Carolina (Fernandes Correia) Pires, he was born in Easton and educated in Stoughton. He is survived by his brother Anthony "Butch" Pires, and he was predeceased by his siblings Joseph and Henry Pires, Connie Azevedo and Mary Silva. He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews. John was a graduate of Stoughton High School, Class of 1955, and is remembered in his yearbook as "Gentleman John". He was inducted into the 2019 Stoughton High School Hall of Fame as a member of the 1954 undefeated football team.
John was the proud past owner of Norwood Tool & Industrial Supply and Pires Liquor Store in Stoughton. He was a knowledgeable and well-respected salesman for 26 years, retiring at the age of 85. John was active in the community as a long-time member of the Stoughton Lions Club where he received the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award. He was a previous member of the Knights of Columbus Council 200 in Stoughton and a member of the Planning Board. He was an active communicant of Immaculate Conception Church in Stoughton where he attended daily mass. John enjoyed woodworking, gardening, and boating, but his greatest joys were spending time with his family, hosting annual Christmas Eve parties, and laughing with his coffee friends each morning. His kind heart will be missed by many.
Funeral will be held from the Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park St. (Rt. 27) Stoughton on Thursday, March 7 at 9:30 AM followed by a Funeral Mass at Immaculate Conception Church, Stoughton at 10:30 AM. Visiting Hours Wednesday from 4-7 PM. Interment will follow at Dry Pond Cemetery, Stoughton. Donations in John’s memory may be made to Mass.
