John J. O'Hare, 89, a lifelong resident of Stoughton, died unexpectedly at Good Samaritan Medical Center in Brockton on January 16. He was the husband of 63 years of Joan A. (Atherton) O'Hare. Son of the late John J. and Dorothy (Desilets) O'Hare, he was born in Haverhill, raised in Stoughton and graduated from Stoughton High School, Class of 1941. Mr. O'Hare was a Corporal in the U.S. Army and a Veteran of World War II, also serving as a paratrooper. He worked for A&P for 30 years before retiring in 1979. Upon retirement, he began a second career in sports. Mr. O'Hare began attending games and coaching Stoughton Little League and also served as a groundskeeper. He spent many hours at the hockey rinks and wrote sports articles for a local newspaper. He became Executive Secretary for both the Hockomock and Mayflower Leagues. John's computer has a wealth of information on all Stoughton sports from 1913-2013. He also served as a school crossing guard in Stoughton.
In addition to his wife, Mr. O'Hare is survived by his children, Robert E. O'Hare and his wife Charlene of N. Easton and Jane D. Mooney and her husband Kevin E. of Stoughton, as well as his grandchildren, Benjamin and Kate Mooney. He was the brother of Bill O'Hare and Irene Lowe both of NH, Edward O'Hare of Plymouth and the late Dorothy Uccello. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Funeral Service will be held from the Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park St. (Rt. 27) Stoughton on Saturday, January 19 at 11 AM. Visiting Hours prior from 9-11 AM. Interment will be private. Donations in John's memory may be sent to the Stoughton Visiting Nurses Assn., 10 Pearl St., Stoughton, MA 02072.
