John J. Mendes, 80, died unexpectedly at Caritas Good Samaritan Medical Center in Brockton on Wednesday, August 20. He was the husband of the late Beatrice M. (Antonelli) Mendes. Born in Stoughton, he was a graduate of St. Mary's School in Stoughton, St. John's High School in Canton and Burdett Business School. Mr. Mendes was a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II. He worked as the Chief Accountant at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston for 44 years before retiring in 1993. A lifelong communicant of Immaculate Conception Church, he was chairman of the Bingo committee and a member of the Parish Council. He was also past president of St. Mary's Home and School Assn. and the Stoughton Jaycees.
Mr. Mendes is survived by his daughters, Sandra M. Fardie and her husband Donald of Lakeville and Judith Deaton of Stoughton, as well as his granddaughter, Andrea Mendes. He was the brother of Frank Mendes of Woburn and David Mendes of W. Bridgewater. He was also the longtime companion of Joan Blair of Stoughton.
Funeral will be held from the Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park St. (Rt. 27) Stoughton on Monday, August 25 at 9:30 AM followed by a Funeral Mass at Immaculate Conception Church, Stoughton at 10:30 AM. Visiting Hours Sunday 3-6 PM. Burial will take place at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Stoughton. Donations in John's name may be made to Mass.
