John J. McCarty, 97, a longtime resident of Stoughton, died Thursday, June 25 at the Goddard Rehabilitation Center in Stoughton. He was the husband of the late Josephine F. (Mahoney) McCarty. Born and raised in Boston, he was a graduate of South Boston High School, Class of 1928. He was a resident of Stoughton since 1952. A veteran of World War II, Mr. McCarty was a Radio Technician's Mate in the U.S. Navy and a Bronze Star Recipient. He was an accident-health claims adjustor for Craftsman Insurance Co. in Boston for 18 years before retiring in 1971. He was a longtime member of the American Legion Post 89 in Stoughton. He was also a member and plank owner of USS Samuel N. Moore DD-747. An avid golfer, he was a member of Ponkapoag Golf Club.
Mr. McCarty is survived by his children, James X. McCarty of S. Dennis and Joanne M. Gallant of Stoughton, as well as his grandchildren, Patrick and Christopher Gallant and Erinn McCarty-Prosser.
Funeral will be held from the Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park St. (Rt.27) Stoughton on Tuesday, June 30 at 8 AM followed by a Funeral Mass at St. James Church, Stoughton at 9 AM. Visiting Hours Monday 5-8 PM. Burial will take place at Knollwood Memorial Park, Canton. Donations in John's name may be made to Paralyzed Veterans of America, 7 Mill Brook Rd., Wilton, NH 03086.
