John F. Downs, 71, a longtime resident of Bridgewater, died at home on Sunday, February 13 surrounded by his family. He was the husband of Jill E. (Howsen) Downs. Born and raised in Oak Bluffs, Martha's Vineyard, he was a graduate of Oak Bluffs High School, Class of 1956 and the College of the Holy Cross, Class of 1960. Mr. Downs was a resident of Bridgewater for the past 29 years. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1960-1962. Mr. Downs was a teacher at Stoughton High School for 30 years before teaching at Cardinal Spellman High School for 10 years until his retirement in October, 2010. He was a member of the Mass. Teacher's Assn. and Bridgewater Veteran's Club. He was an assistant coach for the Stoughton High School football team for several years.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Downs is survived by his children, Todd D. Downs of Austin, TX, Caitlyn M. Downs and Andrew J. Downs both of Bridgewater. He was the brother of Charles E. Downs, Jr. of S. Hadley, Michael P. Downs of VA, Mary E. Butler of Mansfield, Timothy Downs of Falmouth and the late Jerome F. Downs. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Funeral will be held from the Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park St. (Rt.27) Stoughton on Friday, February 18 at 7:45 AM followed by a Funeral Mass at St. Thomas Aquinas Church, Bridgewater at 9 AM. Visiting Hours Thursday from 4-8 PM. Burial will take place at St. Thomas Aquinas Cemetery, Bridgewater.
