Joao A. Sousa, 66, died Monday, January 13, 2014 at the Brigham & Women's Hospital in Boston, after a courageous battle with Leukemia. He was the son of Palmira (Gonsalves) Sousa of Stoughton and the late Joao Sousa. Born in Flores, Azores, Portugal, he was raised and educated in Flores. He was a Veteran of the Portuguese Army. Mr. Sousa moved to the United States in 1974 and settled in Stoughton. He worked as a metal fabricator for Wehsco in Stoughton for over 35 years and then for the past 5 years at the Good Samaritan Medical Center in Brockton as a Housekeeper. He was an active member of the Portuguese community in Stoughton as a member of St. John's Filharmonic Society, Club Luis de Camoes and the Holy Ghost Society of the Azores. He loved to travel and enjoyed trips to Flores and Madeira in the Azores and trips to Florida. In his free time, he enjoyed traveling, digging for quahogs, gardening and tending to his flowers.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his three children, Tommy Sousa of Norton, Vicki Sousa Nelson of Carver and Frank Sousa of Attleboro. He was the brother of Maria Costa and Pam Sousa both of Stoughton, Jose Sousa and Maria Fraga both of Portugal. He was the grandfather of Austyn Sousa, Jayden Nelson and Jordan Nelson. Joao is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Funeral will be held from the Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park St., (Rte 27) Stoughton, on Saturday, January 18, at 9:30 AM followed by a Funeral Mass at the Immaculate Conception Church, Stoughton at 10:30 AM. Visiting Hours will be held Friday, January 17, from 5-8 PM. Interment will follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Stoughton.
