Joao V. Resendes, 76, a longtime resident of Stoughton, died Sunday, June 23, 2019, at his home, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was the beloved husband of over 52 years of Maria deFatima (Pimentel) Resendes. Born, raised and educated in Fajazinha, on the island of Flores, in Portugal, he was a Veteran of the Portuguese Army. In July of 1977, Joao and his wife Maria, moved their young family to the United States and settled in Stoughton, where they have lived since. He worked as a Forklift Operator for Morse Shoe and J. Baker in Canton for over 30 years. He also worked as a caretaker at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Stoughton for over 20 years. He retired at age 63. Mr. Resendes was a founding member of the San Joao Filharmonic Society in Stoughton and the Amigos de Terceira in Pawtucket, RI. He was a gifted mechanic and enjoyed working on cars, fishing and spending time on the beach. Joao was a music lover and played the tuba in the San Joao Filharmonic Band. He also enjoyed traveling to his home in Florida and to Flores. Above all, he loved to spend time with his family and his grandkids.
In addition to his wife, Joao is survived by his beloved daughter, Maria Helena Sousa and her husband David "Spanky" Sousa of Stoughton. He was the grandfather of Harley Sophia Sousa and AJ Joseph Sousa, both of Stoughton. He was the brother of Maria Frade and her husband Antonio and Etelvina Salvador and her husband Jose all of Stoughton and the late Jose Valadao. He is also survived by his sister in law, Maria do Patrocinio Valadao of Stoughton and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral will be held from the Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park St. (Rte. 27), Stoughton on Friday, June 28, 2019, at 9 AM followed by a Funeral Mass at Immaculate Conception Church at 10 AM. Visiting Hours Thursday, June 27, 2019, from 5-8 PM. Interment will take place at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Stoughton.
