Joao A. deSousa, 89, died Sunday, February 1, 2009, at the Caritas Good Samaritan Medical Center in Brockton after a period of failing health. He was the beloved husband of 63 years of Palmira G. (Freitas) de Sousa. Born in Flores, Azores, Portugal, he moved to the United States in 1973 and settled in Stoughton. He worked at Shawmut Mills in Stoughton for many years, retiring several years ago. Mr deSousa was very proud of becoming an American Citizen in 2000. He was a member of the Espirito Santo of the Azores in Stoughton. An avid fan of Benfica Soccer Club, in his free time, he enjoyed watching soccer and working in his garden. He also enjoyed spending time with his family.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children; Joao A. Sousa, Maria H. Costa and Palmira A. Sousa all of Stoughton and Jose M. Sousa and Maria F. Fraga both of Flores, Portugal. He was the brother of Salome Pimental and Isilda Soares both of CA, Celina Aroujo of Canada, Albino Sousa of Portugal and the late Maria doCarmo Sousa, Jose Natal Sousa, Angelo Sousa and Lino deSousa. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren and was predeceased by his grandson Mark Joseph Fraga.
Funeral will be held from the Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park St. (Rt.27) Stoughton on Wednesday, February 4 at 8 AM followed by a Funeral Mass at Immaculate Conception Church, Stoughton at 9 AM. Visiting Hours Tuesday 5-8 PM. Burial will take place at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
