Joan A. (Kelley) Sweeney, 92, passed away peacefully on February 15, 2025. Born and raised in Stoughton, she attended St Mary’s School and Stoughton High School before graduating from Bridgewater State College with a degree in education. Joan married the love of her life, Raymond Sweeney, in 1954 and began her teaching career with a third grade class in Stoughton’s Central district. She continued teaching third grade many years later at the Gibbons School.
Joan was an active member of Immaculate Conception Church in Stoughton where she taught CCD. Everyone knew Joan was an absolutely voracious reader who kept up with all the best sellers and award winning books. It wasn’t unusual to see her looking especially sleepy in the morning because she had stayed up most of the night with another wonderful book that she just couldn’t put down. During the 1980’s when the Celtics dream team was at its best, Joan was their biggest fan. Ray and Joan had a great ticket connection and more often than not you could see the Sweeneys dressed in green and cheering their hearts out from floor seats in the second row. As much as she loved books and sports, Joan’s greatest love was family. She adored her husband, loved her daughters, doted on her grandchildren and treasured her great grandchildren. When Joan and Ray were in their 70’s they sold their house in Stoughton and moved to Queset on the Pond in Easton where they spent many happy years visiting their grandchildren and traveling all over the Unites States, Europe and Asia.
Joan was predeceased by her husband of 66 years, Raymond Sweeney and her precious great granddaughter Madeleine Zarbock. She was the sister of the late Claire Kemp and Frances Kelly. Joan is survived by her daughter Claudia Weed and her husband Jay of Hanover, NH and her daughter Laura Parks and her husband Ken of North Andover, MA. She is also survived by her grandchildren Kelley Zarbock, Zachary Weed, Kaitlyn Parks and Erica Parks as well as her great grandchildren Owen Zarbock and Cecily Zarbock. She also leaves many nieces and nephews who she loved deeply.
In accordance with Joan’s wishes, burial will be private. Donations in Joan’s memory may be made to School on Wheels of Massachusetts, 100 Laurel Street #121, East Bridgewater, MA 02333.
