Joan A. (Atherton) O'Hare, 88, a lifelong resident of Stoughton, died peacefully at the Copley at Stoughton on Friday, February 27, 2015. She was the wife of the late John J. O'Hare. Daughter of the late Robert and Dorothy (Pierce) Atherton, she was born in Stoughton. Joan was a graduate of Stoughton High School, Class of 1944 and Modern School of Fashion and Design in Boston, Class of 1946. She was a fashion designer and taught fashion design at the Center for Adult Education in Boston, as well as private instruction, for 30 years. She then was a ward secretary at New England Sinai Hospital in Stoughton for 12 years before retiring in 1988.
Mrs. O'Hare was a volunteer teacher for adult evening classes at Stoughton High School and later taught quilting at the Stoughton Senior Center for 12 years. She was a former Stoughton Town Representative and also worked the voting polls in Stoughton for 10 years. Joan drove the Vitality Van for Stoughton Public Library. She was a member of the Stoughton Historical Society for 10 years and was President from 1998-2000. She was also a Past President of the Docents at Fuller Art Museum in Brockton.
Mrs. O'Hare is survived by her children, Robert E. O'Hare and his wife Charlene J. of N. Easton and Jane D. Mooney and her husband Kevin E. of Stoughton, as well as her grandchildren, Benjamin and Kate Mooney. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Visiting Hours will be held from Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park St., (Rt. 27) Stoughton on Tuesday, March 3 from 4-7 PM. Interment will be private. A memorial service will take place at the First Parish Universalist Church, 790 Washington St., Stoughton on Saturday, March 7 at 11 AM.
