Joan B. (Rubel) Mead

Joan B. "Nan" (Rubel) Mead, 88, passed away on Saturday, July 13, 2013 in the Life Care Centers of Raynham. She was the wife of the late Lt. Commander Raymond Mead (U.S. Navy), and daughter of the late Edward and Evangeline (Meade) Rubel. She was born and raised in Stoughton, graduated from Stoughton High School in 1942, and lived in West Bridgewater and Bridgewater later in her life.

Joan was a proud and fiercely loyal mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend. She is survived by her daughter, Lee Rivers and her husband James of Bridgewater, and her son, Barry and his wife Janice (Polvinen) Mead of Raynham. She was predeceased by her daughter, Kim Mead. She was the devoted grandmother of Gregg, Mark, and Brian Rivers, and Jennifer, Todd, and Jesse Mead, as well as 15 great grandchildren. She was also the loving sister of Barbara McDermott of Stoughton, Jean Hill of Brewster, and the late James Rubel and Marie St.Thomas.

For 40 years, Joan worked in the radiology department at Goddard and Good Samaritan Hospitals. Her greatest joy came from spending time with family and friends near the ocean. For more than two decades, she and her late husband owned a boat that they docked in Saquatucket Harbor in Harwichport. She was passionate about her grandchildren and supported their efforts (with her chocolate chip cookies in hand) as student-athletes at Bridgewater-Raynham Regional High School and beyond. Joan loved to dance, golf, and garden. She was a member of the Sharon Country Club and the Fieldbrook Young Woman's Club. She also participated in projects with the Stoughton Redevelopment Authority. At the end of World War II, Joan served in the U.S. Navy Reserve as a WAVE.
