James E. Lonergan

James E. Lonergan, 90, a longtime resident of West Bridgewater, died peacefully at Nemasket Healthcare Center in Middleboro on Sunday, June 15, 2014. He was the husband of the late Ruth E. (Sousa) Kaspar Lonergan. Born and raised in Brockton, he was educated in Brockton schools. He was a resident of West Bridgewater for over 55 years. Mr. Lonergan and his twin brother served in U.S. Army during World War II. Drafted in December, 1942, the brothers were among the first to go to war from Brockton. After boot camp the brothers were separated and sent to different European locations. Mr. Lonergan served in the 736th Field Artillery Battalion under General George Patton. He received a Purple Heart for his actions in the Battle of the Bulge. When he returned he worked for the Hallamore Corporation in Holbrook for 42 years as a rigging foreman. He later went on to work part-time at the Hallamore Clydesdale Farm in Lakeville for 7 years before retiring in 2001. Mr. Lonergan was a member and steward of the local Brockton Teamsters Union 653. He volunteered for the Council on Aging and was a longtime usher and communicant of St. Ann's Church both in West Bridgewater. He was a member of the VFW Post 697 in Whitman and American Legion Post 7 in Easton. He loved gardening, animals, listening to music, spending time with his family and attending his grandchildren's sporting events. He also loved reading his daily newspaper.
Mr. Lonergan is survived by his children, Kathleen M. McGonigle and her husband Timothy of Lakeville, Beverly A. Angelos and her husband William of Stoughton and Paul Kaspar and his wife Judith of Wareham. He was the grandfather of Timothy, Jr., Patrick and Michael McGonigle, Scott, Mark and Jeffrey Angelos, Kimberly Keramati, John and Paula Kaspar. He was the brother of the late Helen Lonergan, Richard Lonergan and twin brother Robert F. Lonergan. He is also survived by 10 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the staff at Nemasket Healthcare, Fidelis Hospice, Michelle McNeil, Sherry and Rene Woods for the care and kindness that was given.
Funeral will be held from the Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park St. (Rt.27) Stoughton on Saturday, June 21 at 8:15 AM followed by a Funeral Mass at St. Ann's Church, W. Bridgewater at 9:30 AM. Visiting Hours Friday from 5-7 PM. Interment will take place at Pine Hill Cemetery, W. Bridgewater.
