Retired Stoughton Police Captain James R. "Brud" Kelley, 92, a lifelong resident of Stoughton, died peacefully September 10, 2015 surrounded by his family at the Good Samaritan Medical Center in Brockton. He was the loving husband of 65 years of Marjorie L. "Midge" (Pittsavage) Kelley.
Born in Stoughton, son of the late John & Gladys Kelley, he was raised and educated in Stoughton and was a graduate of Stoughton High School. He also attended Massasoit and Dean Jr. College. Mr. Kelley was a proud Veteran of the United States Marine Corps during World War II, obtaining the rank of 1st Sergeant. He later joined the Stoughton Police Department and rose to the rank of Captain. He retired at the age of 60 as the Court Prosecutor at the Stoughton District Court. He was also Deputy Sheriff of Norfolk County and Honorary Chief of the Auxiliary Police. He was the Town of Stoughton's first Safety Officer. Capt. Kelley had a special relationship with the youth of Stoughton, be it building a raft at Ames Pond for swimming, lighting Mead's Pond for skating or his most gratifying achievement, the Stoughton Armory Record Hops. His goal was to build a good relationship between the youth of Stoughton and the Stoughton Police. Known for his quick wit and sense of humor, in his free time, he enjoyed walking, exercising, gardening, tending to his tomato plants and spending time with his family.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children; Michael Kelley and his wife Celia of Easton, Judy Melchert and her late husband Gary Melchert, James P. Kelley of Stoughton and Brian Kelley and his wife Ursula of CT. He was the brother of Virginia Swallow of Middleboro and the late John, Myles, Robert and Gladys Kelley. He was blessed with 8 grandchildren; Christine Kelley, Lisa Sparks, Mark and Matthew Melchert, Elisabeth, Brian, Lindsey and James Kelley. He is also survived by six beautiful great grandchildren; Shamus and Kiley Melchert, Lily Sparks, Mia & Matthew Melchert and Xavier Corley. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Funeral prayers will be offered in the from Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park St., (Rt. 27) Stoughton on Tuesday at 12 Noon. Visiting Hours Monday from 5-8 PM. Interment will take place at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Stoughton. Donation's in Brud's memory may be made to his favorite charity, St. Jude's Children's Hospital, 501 St. Jude's Pl., Memphis, TN 38105.
