Howard D. Allen, 78, died at the Caritas Good Samaritan Medical Center in Brockton on Tuesday, February 28 after a lengthy illness. He was the beloved husband of Jeanne Callahan Allen. Born in Manchester, NH, Mr. Allen attended Manchester High School and graduated from Quincy High School. He was a graduate of Harvard University, Class of 1950, attended B.C. Law School and became a Fellow with the Society of Actuaries in 1955. He was a resident of North Easton for 20 years. Mr. Allen was an U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II and a First Lieutenant with the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He was Chief Actuary and Senior Executive Vice President for John Hancock Insurance Co. in Boston for 27 years before becoming Vice President at Boston Mutual Insurance Co. for 9 years until his retirement in 1996. After his retirement Mr. Allen enjoyed living at his golf course community in Florida, traveling and spending time with his wife, Jeanne. He also enjoyed playing Bridge and shooting pool. He was a history and art history buff.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Allen was the cherished father of Annie Fonda of NY, May Allen of AZ, Marc Allen of Natick, June Allen of France, Juliett Jonjak of CO, Geri Callahan of Braintree and Kate Callahan of Quincy. He was the brother of Delphine Haldane and her husband Rev. Robert of Malden and brother-in-law of Rev. George Brennan of Sarasota, FL. He was also attended by his dear friend Mohammed Said and survived by 5 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren and 3 nieces. He was preceded in death by his former wife, Dorothy Allen.
Memorial Service will be held from the Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park St. (Rt. 27) Stoughton on Wednesday, March 8 at 1 PM. Visiting Hours omitted. Interment will be private.
