Gordon W. Oro

Gordon W. Oro, 90, a longtime resident of Stoughton, died on Tuesday, June 17, 2014 in Reading. He was the beloved husband of the late Helen (Harding) Oro. Son of the late Magnar and Gena (Jackobsen) Oro, and his late stepmother Irma (Peterson) Oro, he was born and raised in Boston. He graduated from Northeastern University with a degree in Electrical Engineering and later in Business Administration.
Mr. Oro proudly served his country in World War II in the 8th Armored Infantry Division, where he earned the Combat Infantry Badge and the Bronze Star. In 2013, he was awarded the French Legion Medal of Honor.
He worked initially as a machinist and then joined MIT. He worked on the inertial guidance system for the moon shot and in the supersonic wind tunnel at MIT. In 1984 he retired from MIT's Artificial Intelligence Laboratory and the Laboratory for Computer Science.
Mr. Oro was a member of the Viking Club and Stenkil Lodge in Braintree. He enjoyed fixing things and working on house projects, dancing, gardening and swimming.
Mr. Oro is survived by his children, Paula R. Piccolo and her husband Richard of Andover and David H. Oro and his wife Barbara of Melrose, as well as his grandchildren, Christopher, Olivia and Madeline Oro. He was the brother of the late William F. "Willy" Oro and Roy W. Oro. He was the brother-in-law of Marilyn Oro and the late Lillian Oro and is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Funeral Service will be held from the Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park St. (Rt.27) Stoughton on Saturday, June 21 at 10 AM. Visiting Hours Friday from 5-8 PM. Interment will take place at Knollwood Memorial Park, Canton. Donations in Gordon's memory may be made to the Sawtelle Family Hospice House, 607 North Ave. Ste. 17, Wakefield, MA 01880 or Voluntary Services, Funds to Oncology, 150 S. Huntington Ave., Boston, MA 02130.
