Gilberto DeFreitas, 81, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family, Wednesday, May 9, 2018, at the Good Samaritan Medical Center in Brockton after a long period of declining health. He was the husband of 53 years of Maria deFatima Freitas (Gomes) DeFreitas. Born and raised and educated in Lomba, Flores in the Azores of Portugal, he was a veteran of the Portuguese Army. Mr. DeFreitas came to the United States over 50 year ago and settled in Stoughton. He worked for the Town of Stoughton School Department as a Custodian at the Dawe School for 13 years, retiring in 2001. Prior to that, he worked for Sharon Box Lumber in Sharon and also worked for Dentch Ford in Stoughton as a mechanic. He was a longtime fan of Benfica Soccer Club and enjoyed watching soccer and WWE Wrestling. In his free time, he enjoyed working in his yard, gardening, volunteering at the Holy Ghost Feast at Immaculate Conception Church and spending time with his grandchildren and family.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter Teresa Capone and her husband Stephen and his son Billy DeFreitas and his wife Stacy all of Stoughton. He was the grandfather of Olivia K. Capone and Chloe M. Capone. He was the brother of Joao Freitas and Mariana Dias both of Canada and the late Maria Vasconcelos, Helen Medeiros, Jose Freitas, Francisco Freitas, Norberto Freitas and Vasco Freitas. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Funeral will be held from the Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park St., (Rt. 27) Stoughton on Tuesday, May 15, 2018, at 9 AM followed by a Funeral Mass at Immaculate Conception Church at 10 AM. Visiting Hours Monday from 5-8 PM. Interment will take place at Evergreen Cemetery, Stoughton. Donations in Gil's memory may be made to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, P.O.
