Gertrude Mary (Larkin) Miller, 97, a resident of Sharon MA and Megansett on Cape Cod, died peacefully at Norwood Hospital on Thursday, December 6 surrounded by her family. She was the wife of the late Robert W. Miller. Born in Worcester and raised in Cherry Valley, she was a graduate of Leicester High School and Emmanuel College. Gert spent summers with her family in Megansett for more than 50 years, where generations of family and friends laughed at her wit, sang to her piano and treasured her warmth and friendship. She loved music and even at age 97 could get a crowd singing, be it Broadway tunes or jazz improvisations of her own composition. She was a long time member of Megansett Yacht Club where she was regarded as the oral historian of the community. Gertrude was an English teacher at Leicester High School in the 1930s before she married and raised her family, and later become one of the first Special Education teachers in Massachusetts. She was an active member of St. Joseph Parish in Leicester until 1984. She was a longstanding member and sang in the choir at Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Sharon as well as at St. Elizabeth Seton Church in North Falmouth.
Mrs. Miller was the mother of R. Timothy Miller of Austin, TX, Michael W. Miller and his wife Lorraine of Woodstock, CT, William T. Miller and his wife Priscilla of Fairfield, ME, Geri Scott of Sharon, and Jeanie T. Miller and her partner Kris Burns of Athol. She was the grandmother of Jamie Haverty, Terri Patashnik, Brooke Gelhaus, Michael Miller, and Michael, Mitchel, Lillian, Robert and Valarie MacArthur. She was the sister of Jean T. Larkin of Falmouth, MA. She is also survived by 27 great grandchildren and countless friends.
The funeral will be held on Monday, December 10. Visiting hours will be 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park St. (Rt.27) Stoughton followed by a Funeral Mass at Our Lady of Sorrows Church, Sharon at 11:00 AM. Interment will take place at Otis National Cemetery on Tuesday December 11 at 1:45 p.m. Donations in Gertrude's memory may be sent to CF Pals, a lung health service organization, at 1 South Main Street, Orange, MA 01364.
