Gerald J. Leaver, Sr., 82, a longtime resident of Stoughton, died at home on Saturday, May 10 after a period of failing health. He was the husband of Florence (Hanlon) Leaver. Born in Boston, he was a graduate of English High School. He earned both a bachelor's degree and a master's degree in history from Boston College. Mr. Leaver was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II, earning several medals, one of which was the Purple Heart. He was a supervisor with the U.S. Postal Service in Wollaston for many years before retiring in 1986. He also was a teacher at Stoughton High School for several years. An avid Red Sox fan, he enjoyed collecting quarters, photo albums and spending time with his family.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Leaver is survived by his children, Janet M. Leaver, DO and Paul F. Leaver and his wife Barbara all of Stoughton, George R. Leaver and his wife Lynne of Lakeville and John M. Leaver and his wife Tammie of Fairhaven; his grandchildren, Colleen, Gerald Joseph, III, Mark T. Robert, Corey, Kevin, Christopher and Julianne Leaver; and his daughter-in-law Norine Leaver of Stoughton. He was preceded in death by his son, Gerald J. Leaver, Jr. and his daughter, Virginia Leaver. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Funeral will be held from the Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park St. (Rt. 27) Stoughton on Wednesday at 9:30 AM followed by a Funeral Mass at Immaculate Conception Church, Stoughton at 10:30 AM. Visiting Hours Tuesday 4-8 PM. Donations in Gerald's memory may be made to Stoughton Food Pantry, 109 Pleasant St., Stoughton or Immaculate Conception Church Building Fund, 122 Canton St., Stoughton, 02072. Burial will be at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Stoughton.
