Eugene R. Butterworth, 79, died Tuesday at the New England Sinai Hospital in Stoughton after a long illness. He was the husband of Patricia I. (Desmond) Butterworth. Born in Boston, he was raised in Hyde Park and was a graduate of Hyde Park Schools. Mr. Butterworth was a veteran of the US Army and the United States Marine Corps Reserves. He worked for the MBTA as a collector in the Quincy Station for over 25 years, retiring over 22 years ago. He was a longtime resident of both Stoughton and Port Charlotte, FL. He was a member of the American Legion and the Elks, both in Florida. He was also a member of the Carman's Union with the MBTA. In his free time, he enjoyed spending time with his family.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Gary E. Butterworth of Wareham, Cindy Gillespie of Stoughton, Ricky Butterworth of Rockland, Susan Siegel of Middleboro and Michael Butterworth of FL. He was the grandfather of Billy Gillespie, Jason Gillespie, Mathew Butterworth, Jennifer Butterworth Gropman, Kara Casey, Adam Casey, Brandon Siegel, Tabitha Butterworth and Noah Butterworth. He is also survived by 4 great grandchildren.
Funeral will be held from the Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park St. (Rt. 27), Stoughton on Friday at 9:30 AM followed by a Funeral Mass at Immaculate Conception Church at 10:30 AM. Visiting Hours Thursday 5-8 PM. Burial will follow at Knollwood Memorial Park, Canton.
