Essie D. (Brown) Smith, 80, a longtime resident of Stoughton, died unexpectedly at home on Monday, September 9. Daughter of the late Benjamin Brown and Navay Dawkins, she was born in Edgefield, SC and educated in Washington, DC schools. She was a resident of Mattapan for 30 years before moving to Stoughton 27 years ago. Essie was a solderer for Raytheon in Waltham for many years before retiring at age 65. She enjoyed taking cruises, trips to Foxwoods, shopping and ice cream. She was a member of the High Lighters bowling team in Boston for many years.
Essie is survived by her children, Beverly Smith of Boston, Raymond Smith, Jr. and his wife Deborah Jackman-Smith of Dorchester, Johnnie Smith of Brockton, Vivian Smith-Davis and her husband Keith Davis of Hyde Park and Theresa Smith Tracey of Dorchester. She was the sister of Grace Dawkins and Ruth Dawkins both of Roxbury and the late Mary Dawkins and Gus Dawkins. She is also survived by her former husband, Raymond Smith, Sr. of Mattapan, 11 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
Funeral Service will be held at St. John's Missionary Baptist Church, 230 Warren St., Roxbury on Monday, September 16 at 11 AM. Visitation prior from 10-11 AM. Interment will be private.
