Edward F. O’Brien, 100, passed away peacefully Friday, April 11, 2025, at the Copley at Stoughton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Stoughton. Born in St. Louis, MO, he was raised and educated in Brockton and was a 1942 graduate of Brockton High School. In 1943, he entered the US Army and proudly served during World War II in the Rhineland and Central Europe, where he received a Purple Heart Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, Good Conduct Badge, and Victory Medal, along with many other accolades. After his honorable discharge, he returned home to Brockton and later married Ellen M. Murray in 1948. They spent 65 happy years together and raised 6 beloved children before her death in 2013. Ed worked as a Sales Agent for MetLife in Brockton for many years. He retired several years ago. He was a resident of Brockton for many years and has been a resident of Stoughton since 2011 and has been a resident of the Copley at Stoughton for the past few months. Ed’s family and his faith were the two most important things in his life. He was a dedicated and loving husband and father and a beloved grandfather. He was a longtime active parishioner and Eucharistic Minister at St. Edward’s Church in Brockton, and later was a parishioner at St. James Church in Stoughton and enjoyed the time saying his daily prayers. He was also a former member of the Knights of Columbus. He was an avid Boston sports fan, and especially loved watching the Patriots and Red Sox. He enjoyed golfing, reading, doing crossword puzzles, playing cribbage, and playing the card game Whist, but above all, his fondest memories were when he was surrounded by his beloved family.
Husband of the late Ellen M. (Murray) O’Brien, Ed is survived by his children, Kathleen O’Brien of SC, Ann E. Macrina and her husband James of CT, Edward F. “Bucky” O’Brien, III and his wife Sandra and Maryrose Heffner and her husband Thomas, all of SC, John M. O’Brien and his wife Elaine of Avon and Colleen F. Tyer and her husband Steven of Stoughton. He was the loving grandfather of Jamie and his wife Jamie Paris, Jeffrey Paris, Matthew, Mark, and his wife Aom Macrina, Nick and his wife Claire Macrina, Julieann Macrina, Edward F. O’Brien IV, Meghan and her husband Zach, Jonathan O’Brien, Larry, Tanya, and Christin Jenkins, Sean Dillon and his fiancé Shelby, TJ Heffner, Andrew and Trevor O’Brien, Margaret and her fiancé Trevor, and James Tyer. He was also the loving great-grandfather of Evelyn and Bella. He was the brother of the late Rose Carriuolo. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. The family would also like to thank the staff at Copley at Stoughton for the wonderful care they had given to our parents.
Visiting Hours will be held at the Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park St. (Rt. 27) Stoughton on Thursday, April 24, 2025 from 4-7 PM. Funeral will take place at the funeral home on Friday, April 25, 2025 at 9:15 AM followed by a Funeral Mass at St. James Church, Stoughton, at 10:30 AM. Interment will follow at the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne at 12:30 PM. Due to floral limitations at the cemetery, Ed’s family has asked that donations in his memory may be made to the Copley at Stoughton Resident Activities Fund, 380 Sumner St., Stoughton, MA 02072.
