Edward L. McGovern, 88, formerly of Brockton, died at the Carolina Medical Center in Charlotte, NC on Wednesday, January 28, 2015. He was the husband of Ruth I. (Houlder) for 66 years. Born and raised in Beverly, he was a graduate of Beverly High School, Class of 1944 and attended Boston University. Mr. McGovern was a Private First Class in the U.S. Air Force and a Veteran of World War II. He was a resident of Brockton for 62 years before moving to Tega Cay, SC in May of 2014. Edward was a pharmaceutical representative for Pfizer for 40 years before retiring 30 years ago. An avid golfer, he was a longtime member of Easton Country Club.
In addition to his wife, Mr. McGovern is survived by his children, David M. McGovern of Arlington, Daniel E. McGovern of Florida, Patricia H. McLellan and her husband Kenneth of Tega Cay, SC, formerly of Bridgewater, Timothy P. McGovern and his wife Hilary of Dighton, Terence C. McGovern of Charlotte, NC, formerly of Mendon and Janet I. McGovern and her partner Robert Riley of Lakeville. He was the grandfather of Daniel, Maura, Andrew, Sarah, Teraissa, Benjamin, Nolan, Gwen, Michael, Samuel, David and Annabelle and the great-grandfather of Fern, Arlo, Anya, Edward Ryan, Sean, Kate, Beatrice, Bryce and Sophie. He was the brother-in-law of Montague and Sally Houlder.
Funeral will be held from Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park St., (Rt. 27) Stoughton on Saturday, February 7 at 8 AM followed by a Funeral Mass at St. James Church, Stoughton at 9 AM. Visiting Hours Friday from 5-8 PM. Interment will take place at St. Mary Cemetery, Salem. In lieu of flowers, donations in Edward's memory may be made to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
